| Elgin Key &
Lock Co. was founded in 1933 by Erhard Mooseman. In Germany Erhard was a
locksmith by trade and brought his skills to America in the 1920's by opening
a locksmith shop at the corner of Armitage and Kostner in Chicago .
Erhard then accepted an engineering job at
Elgin's St. Joseph hospital but it was not long before he decided

into locksmithing opening Elgin Key & Lock Co. at 1028 Dundee Avenue in
Elgin Illinois.
Around
1953 the business moved to 215 Kimball street where it continued to
operate until 1969 when it was relocated to the former Phillips 66 station
property on the corner of North St. (now Symphony Way) and North Spring Street. Elgin Key & Lock Co.
has
expanded a few times but is still located at 201 N. Spring St. in Elgin.
Elgin Key & Lock
incorporated in 1969. The current President of Elgin
Key & Lock, Co. is Clark E.
Houghtby.
